Family is the Root of Joy PDF Print E-mail
Written by Yun Xiang Tseng

altFamily is the root of joy, security and prosperity.   When our family is happy it allows us to be secure, joyful and prosperous.  When the family is not happy, then we cannot find stillness and our root is broken.  Our family is a reflection of us.  When the family is not happy we know that we need to take a good look and see what we need to change.

Filial duty and loyalty are key to a happy family.  We must take care of our parents and not abandon them because they are aging or because we focus on what they did wrong or what we perceive that they "did to us".  We forget what our parents contributed to us.  At the minimum they gave us the gift of life and without that life we don't have the opportunity to grow into heaven.

The Five Emotions PDF Print E-mail

altWe suffer from the five emotions.  What is beyond that?  Enjoying the five emotions.  Rather than suffering we enjoy the emotions.  Having emotions is our unique ability as humans, a gift of the Tao.

We are taught to suppress our emotions, that emotions are not good.  When we can see and not see, do and not do then we can go beyond the emotions.  Suffering and enjoying the emotions are both attachments.

It Just It! PDF Print E-mail

The three treasures of the Tao are mercy, forgiveness and conscience. We are always wondering about the mystery. We are always confused about it. The mystery is the Tao. "It just it" is the summary of these last several blogs. It is very hard to change our western thinking. Western people when young have more freedom and have developed their intelligence and are allowed to question. In some ways it is good and in other ways it is bad. China didn’t have psychologists until very recently. Americans are more aggressive in their thinking. Psychologically Americans are far ahead of other countries. But we forget about the great roots of the ancient philosophies and the great wisdom of other cultures. They have a way to live in harmony. Who gives us the right to invade their thinking?

Eastern and western culture is very different – we in the west have more creativity but it confuses our wisdom. The more we think the more polluted and competitive we become. We need to find ultra stillness. We need to learn "It Just It". The wonder is good to have but it keeps us from the ultra stillness. We need to name it to understand it.

Stillness PDF Print E-mail

The root of the Tao is stillness, void, what is natural. What is natural is the Tao. If one learns how to return to ultra stillness, one finds its root. Returning is the motion of the Tao. Virtue is the nature of the Tao. Ultra stillness creates motion. The key is to find ultra stillness.

The human mind is polluted. Once "my" or "I" is in play you lose the root of yourself. Original spirit (Yuan Shen) comes from the Tao. "Man follows nature" is a Taoist slogan. Love, compassion, family and friends are all the root – they are all nature. Our original nature is kindness; that is why babies have no fear. Babies are then polluted by humans, the 7 emotions and 6 desires rise.
